Ford has issued a major recall affecting over 197,000 Mustang Mach-E vehicles due to a troubling defect that could trap rear-seat passengers inside the vehicle. The issue stems from faulty electronic door latches that may stay locked in certain situations, posing a serious safety risk, especially to children and others unable to manually open the door. This recall, which affects Mach-Es from model years 2021 through 2025, is the latest in a series of safety concerns involving Ford’s electric SUV. If you or someone you know drives a Mustang Mach-E in California, read on to learn what you need to know — and what steps to take if you suspect your vehicle is a lemon.
What Is the Problem?
The core issue lies with the rear door latches on the Ford Mustang Mach-E. In the event that the vehicle’s battery drops to a low charge, these latches may fail to unlock properly once the front doors are shut. This malfunction effectively locks the rear passengers inside the vehicle — a serious hazard, especially for children or individuals with limited mobility. The problem increases the risk of injury during emergencies or in high-heat conditions when quick exit is critical.
What Vehicles Are Affected?
This recall applies to approximately 197,432 Mustang Mach-E vehicles from model years:
- 2021
- 2022
- 2023
- 2024
- 2025
Ford has also reported that over 120,000 additional vehicles may be affected internationally.
What Is Ford Doing to Fix It?
To address the issue, Ford dealerships will provide a free software update for two systems:
- Powertrain Control Module
- Secondary On-Board Diagnostic Control Module C
This update is designed to correct the door latch malfunction, ensuring rear passengers are no longer at risk of being trapped. No parts replacement is required at this time.
When and How Will Owners Be Notified?
Ford plans to send the initial owner notification letters by July 23, 2025. A second round of letters will be mailed once the remedy is fully ready, which is anticipated to be available starting September 29, 2025.
If you own a Mustang Mach-E, you are encouraged to check your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website or contact Ford directly at (866) 436-7332 referencing recall number 25S65.
