Toyota Recalls Over 440,000 Tundra Trucks for Reverse Light Failure

Toyota has issued a large-scale recall involving approximately 443,000 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks due to a defect in their reverse lighting systems. This issue poses a serious safety concern, particularly when drivers operate their vehicles in low-light conditions. Water intrusion can cause both reverse lights to fail, leaving the driver without visibility while reversing and removing an important signal to other drivers. As a result, the risk of collisions is significantly increased. This recall affects vehicles manufactured between 2021 and 2025 and applies to both U.S. and Australian markets.

What Is the Problem?

The problem lies within the reverse lamp assemblies of the affected Tundra trucks. Over time, the multi-layer vent patch designed to prevent water intrusion can fail due to thermal cycling. This can allow moisture to enter the lamp housing, leading to corrosion of internal components such as the circuit board, connectors, and wire harness. As a result, the reverse lights may stop functioning altogether—or, in some cases, turn on when not needed. Additional issues reported include the reversing camera activating incorrectly and warning indicators such as the check engine light turning on.

What Vehicles Are Affected?

The recall affects approximately 443,000 units of the following vehicles:

  • Model Years: 2022–2025
  • Models: Toyota Tundra and Toyota Tundra Hybrid
  • Production Dates: June 30, 2021, to March 7, 2025

To find out if your vehicle is part of this recall, visit Toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

What Is Toyota Doing to Fix It?

Toyota dealers will replace both reverse lamp assemblies with newly designed components to prevent future water intrusion. Additionally, if corrosion is found in the wiring harness connectors, those will also be repaired at no cost to the vehicle owner. The entire procedure is expected to take around two hours, though time may vary based on dealership workload.

When and How Will Owners Be Notified?

Toyota will begin notifying affected owners by mid-July 2025 via mail. Instructions on how to schedule the repair appointment at an authorized Toyota dealership will be included. In the meantime, concerned owners can contact Toyota customer service at 800-331-4331 for additional support.
