Ford Recalls Over 1 Million Vehicles Due to Backup Camera Malfunction

Ford has announced a major recall impacting over 1 million vehicles due to a persistent issue with rearview camera functionality. The defect may cause the backup camera to freeze, delay, or go completely blank while the vehicle is in reverse. This failure can impair driver visibility and significantly increase the risk of a crash. The recall affects a wide range of Ford and Lincoln models manufactured between 2021 and 2025. Although no serious injuries have been reported, the recall comes amid growing scrutiny of backup camera reliability. Ford plans to fix the issue with a free software update.

What Is the Problem?

The root of the problem lies in a software error affecting the accessory protocol interface module. This bug may cause the rearview camera image to freeze, delay, or not display at all when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. Since rearview cameras are federally mandated safety features, any disruption in their function can pose serious safety risks. Ford has reported at least one minor crash related to the issue.

What Vehicles Are Affected?

The recall affects approximately 1,075,299 vehicles, including the following Ford and Lincoln models:

Ford Models:

  • 2021–2024 Bronco, F-150, Edge
  • 2021–2023 Mustang Mach-E
  • 2022–2025 Transit
  • 2022–2024 Expedition
  • 2023–2024 Escape
  • 2023–2024 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600
  • 2024 Mustang, Ranger

Lincoln Models:

  • 2021–2023 Nautilus
  • 2022–2024 Navigator
  • 2023–2024 Corsair

What Is Ford Doing to Fix It?

Ford is addressing the issue by releasing a software update that will be provided free of charge. Owners have the option to receive the update over-the-air (OTA) or visit a local Ford or Lincoln dealership for the fix. The update targets the SYNC system and is designed to resolve the rearview camera functionality by correcting the faulty communication sequencing.

When and How Will Owners Be Notified?

Ford will begin notifying affected owners with interim letters starting June 16, 2025. A follow-up letter will be sent later in the third quarter of 2025 when the software remedy is fully available. Owners can also contact Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 25S49, or visit nhtsa.gov to check their vehicle’s status using the VIN.
