Audi is recalling nearly 6,500 e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT models from 2022 to 2024 due to a high-voltage battery module defect. The issue involves a risk of thermal events or fire due to internal short circuits in the battery modules, which were supplied by LG Energy Solution. If you are an affected Audi owner, California Lemon Law may offer you compensation, and Lemon Lawyers LA is here to support you in the process.
Details of the Recall
The recall impacts 4,980 Audi e-tron GT models manufactured between March 2021 and December 2023 and 1,519 Audi RS e-tron GT models produced between March 2021 and February 2024. This recall expands on a prior one issued in March 2024 and addresses degradation in individual battery cells, which could lead to short circuits and increased fire risk.
What Caused the Battery Issue?
Following initial investigations in March, Audi and Porsche’s analytics revealed further risks associated with battery degradation in affected e-tron GT models. Over time, individual cells within the high-voltage battery modules can degrade, potentially causing internal short circuits. Audi’s Product Safety Committee, after reviewing this data, decided to implement a new recall and monitor battery health through an onboard diagnostic software update.
What Should Audi Owners Do Now?
Audi advises owners of affected vehicles to limit battery charging to 80% capacity until a full solution is available, expected in early 2025. Audi will introduce advanced diagnostic software that continuously monitors battery health, detects potential issues, and alerts owners if a risk is detected.
For vehicles with online data monitoring capabilities, Audi will remotely assess battery health and notify owners if battery replacement is needed. For models without online monitoring, Audi dealerships will perform regular diagnostic checks to ensure safety. Owners will begin receiving notification letters from Audi by November 29, 2024.
