Ford Motor Company has issued a recall affecting several popular truck and SUV models due to a software malfunction that may disable trailer brakes. This issue, which affects the integrated trailer brake control module, poses a significant safety risk, potentially leading to longer stopping distances and increasing the chance of accidents when towing.
Affected Vehicles
The recall applies to specific 2021-2022 model-year vehicles, including:
- Ford F-150 (2021-2022)
- Ford Maverick (2022)
- Ford Expedition (2022)
- Lincoln Navigator (2022)
- Ford Super Duty Trucks (F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550 – 2022)
The Safety Risk
The software error may prevent the trailer’s electric or electric-over-hydraulic brake system from engaging, causing the trailer to rely solely on the towing vehicle’s brakes. This could lead to excessive strain on the truck’s braking system, reduced stopping power, and an increased risk of accidents, particularly in emergency braking situations or on steep roads.
Ford’s Recall Remedy
Ford is addressing this issue by offering a free software update at Ford and Lincoln dealerships. Affected vehicle owners will receive notifications by mail starting April 14, 2025. Those who have already paid for the repair may be eligible for reimbursement under Ford’s recall plan.
To check if your vehicle is affected, visit NHTSA’s recall website or contact Ford’s customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
What This Means for Owners
If your vehicle is affected, schedule an appointment with your dealership as soon as possible to ensure your trailer brakes function correctly. Delaying the fix could put you and others on the road at risk.
