GM Recalls Nearly 450,000 Vehicles for Brake Fluid Warning Light Issue

General Motors (GM) has announced a recall affecting nearly 450,000 vehicles from its Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands due to a brake fluid warning light malfunction. The software issue in the electronic brake control module may prevent the low brake fluid warning light from illuminating, which could lead to decreased braking performance and increased risk of accidents.

GM Recall: Affected Vehicles and Models

The recall applies to several 2023-2024 GM models, including:

  • 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (59,175 vehicles)
  • 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 (35,989 vehicles)
  • 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe (134,854 vehicles)
  • 2023-2024 Chevrolet Suburban (65,411 vehicles)
  • 2023-2024 GMC Yukon (57,083 vehicles) and Yukon XL (44,945 vehicles)
  • 2023-2024 Cadillac Escalade (33,005 vehicles) and Escalade ESV (19,209 vehicles)

The brake warning light issue results from a software glitch in the electronic brake control module (eBCM), which may fail to signal low brake fluid levels. While the vehicle may still meet stopping-distance requirements in the event of a brake fluid leak, the delayed warning light can result in reduced braking effectiveness, increasing the risk of a crash.

What Should GM Owners Do?

GM is offering a free software update to resolve the issue. Owners can either visit their local dealership for the update or download it over the air (OTA) if their vehicle supports OTA updates. Notifications will be sent by GM starting October 28, 2024.
