Mazda and Fiat Recall Over 93,000 Vehicles for Airbag Deployment Issue

Mazda and Fiat have issued recalls affecting more than 93,500 vehicles due to a significant issue with the airbag control module. This problem impacts 2016-2023 Mazda MX-5 Miatas and 2017-2020 Fiat 124 Spiders, and it may cause the airbags to deploy with excessive force during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

Details of the Mazda and Fiat Airbag Recall

The recall targets 77,670 Mazda MX-5 Miatas built between April 2015 and November 2023, and 15,835 Fiat 124 Spiders produced between March 2016 and August 2020. These vehicles are equipped with a faulty airbag control module software, which may cause the front airbags to deploy with greater force than intended during minor collisions.

This excessive force could potentially lead to injuries, particularly for occupants who are not wearing seat belts. Fortunately, as of September 2024, no injuries or accidents related to this issue have been reported by Mazda or Fiat.

How Mazda and Fiat Plan to Fix the Issue

Mazda and Fiat will resolve this problem by reprogramming the airbag control module with updated software. This repair will be performed free of charge at their respective dealerships. Mazda will begin notifying affected owners on November 17, 2024, and Fiat will start notifying owners by November 7, 2024.

Owners with questions can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 (recall number 6924I) or Fiat (Stellantis) at 1-800-853-1403 (recall number A3B). Vehicle owners can also check their VIN on the NHTSA recall website or call the NHTSA’s hotline at 1-888-327-4236 to verify if their vehicle is affected.
