Tesla has issued a recall affecting more than 376,000 of its Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs due to a potential issue with the power steering system. The recall impacts specific 2023 models with software versions prior to 2023.38.4. If you are in Glendale, Los Angeles, or a surrounding city and own one of these vehicles, it’s important to be aware of this issue.
According to reports filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles may experience a loss of power steering assist when coming to a stop and then accelerating. This is due to a potential “overstress condition” in the printed circuit board responsible for the electronic power-assisted steering (EPAS) system. While Tesla states that manual steering remains available, a loss of power steering, especially at low speeds, can require significantly more effort and potentially increase the risk of an accident.
Tesla has already begun deploying an over-the-air (OTA) software update to address the problem. The automaker will begin formally notifying owners of affected vehicles by March 25th. Tesla says that steering “will not be affected” if the “overstress condition” occurs while driving above 0 mph, and that manual steering remains available
What to Do if You’re Affected:
- Check Your Tesla Software Version: Verify your Model 3 or Model Y’s software version. If it’s earlier than 2023.38.4, ensure you receive and install the latest over-the-air update from Tesla.
- Monitor for Symptoms: Be aware of any increased steering effort, particularly at low speeds or when starting from a stop.
- Contact Tesla: If you have questions or concerns, you can contact Tesla directly at 877-798-3752.
- Contact NHTSA: You can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
