Toyota Recalls Over 100,000 Tundra and Lexus LX Vehicles Due to Engine Manufacturing Flaw

Toyota Motor North America has issued an important recall impacting more than 100,000 vehicles, including Toyota Tundra trucks and Lexus LX SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years. This recall addresses a critical safety concern involving engine defects caused by leftover manufacturing debris.

Recall Details

The recall involves 102,092 vehicles, including 98,568 Toyota Tundra pickups and 3,524 Lexus LX600 SUVs. During production, machining debris was left in the turbocharged V-6 engines, which can lead to severe engine malfunctions. These issues include engine knocking, rough operation, failure to start, and even complete engine failure. The risk of losing engine power, particularly at high speeds, makes this recall a significant safety concern, as it heightens the chance of accidents.

Toyota’s Plan and Customer Support

In response to the problem, Toyota is taking decisive action by replacing the engines in all affected vehicles free of charge. On July 25, Toyota confirmed that engine replacement is the most effective solution. The engine replacement process will take approximately 13 to 21 hours, and during this time, customers will be provided with loaner or rental vehicles to minimize inconvenience. It’s important to note that this issue only affects gas-powered models, so hybrid versions of the Tundra and LX600 are not impacted.

What Affected Owners Should Know

Toyota and Lexus dealers began notifying affected vehicle owners in July 2024. If you haven’t yet received notification, you can check if your vehicle is part of the recall by visiting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website or using Toyota’s recall tool. The recall comes amid several other challenges for Toyota, including recent recalls involving the Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX due to airbag issues.

As of May 2024, Toyota had received 824 engine warranty claims related to this issue. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries linked to the problem. Toyota’s swift action to replace engines aims to restore customer confidence and ensure the safety of their vehicles on the road.
