Volkswagen has issued a major recall affecting 114,478 vehicles due to potentially dangerous driver-side airbag defects. The recall involves several Beetle and Passat models equipped with Takata airbags, which have been the subject of ongoing safety concerns for years.
Which Vehicles Are Affected?
The recall includes the following Volkswagen models:
- 2017-2019 Volkswagen Beetle
- 2017-2019 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible
- 2006-2007 Volkswagen Passat Sedan
- 2012-2014 Volkswagen Passat
- 2017 Volkswagen Passat Wagon
What’s the Problem?
The issue lies with the Takata SDI-D driver’s side frontal airbags. These airbags contain a propellant that can degrade over time due to prolonged exposure to high humidity, heat, and temperature cycling. This degradation may cause the inflator to rupture and send sharp metal fragments into the cabin, increasing the risk of severe injuries or fatalities.
While no injuries or incidents tied to this recall have been reported in these specific vehicles, Takata airbags have been linked to 28 fatalities and over 400 injuries in the U.S. in other recalls.
What Should Owners Do?
Volkswagen will notify affected vehicle owners via mail starting December 27, 2024. Dealers will replace the driver’s side front airbag module free of charge.
For questions or concerns, Volkswagen owners can contact the automaker directly at 1-800-893-5298, referencing recall numbers 69EG and 69GQ, or visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website to check their vehicle identification number (VIN).
